On October 2, 2012, then-2nd Lieutenant Nicholas Dockery's platoon was ambushed by an estimated 150 Taliban fighters in Kapisa Province, Afghanistan. Over four hours of close combat in urban terrain, Dockery crossed open ground under fire multiple times to reach isolated and wounded soldiers. He fought his way through a multi-level compound, used his own body to shield a fellow soldier from a grenade blast, killed two enemy fighters who were approaching a wounded American, performed lifesaving aid, and was the last man to leave the battlefield.

Beyond his service, Dockery founded the Nicholas Dockery Foundation in 2025, supporting art and equine therapy programs for veterans dealing with PTSD and mental health challenges.
